FREEDOM and DETENTION JUDGE

The Freedom and Detention Judge (Juge des Libertés et de la Détention or JLD) is a magistrate presiding by order at the common pleas court. Created by the June 15th 2000 law, this judge has various competences concerning individual liberty: custody, probation, bail, search warrants...
Concerning irregular immigrants, this judge decides whether they are kept in waiting zones beyond a certain period or in detention. Detainees must appear before this judge within two days of being held, then 15 days after this first hearing, if they haven't (already) been deported or freed.
