For the 2010 DVD edition of RESF: a resistance network, we have worked out a glossary of key words heard in the films, related to France’s immigration policy. The information contained in this lexicon gives some context and details about the events recounted in the films.
CESEDA
In French law, the Code on Entry and Stay of Foreigners and Right of Asylum (CESEDA), also called “Immigration and Asylum Code”, is the code containing legal and statutory clauses concerning foreigners’ rights: conditions of entry on French territory (visa or waiting zone), residence permits, family reunification, right of asylum and expulsion procedures (detention, escorting to the border, deportation).
It was put into effect on March 1, 2005 and according to the Gisti: “It is not just one more reform, this law makes official the selection of foreigners according to the interest they represent for France and calls ‘unwanted immigration’ what is nonetheless guaranteed by fundamental rights (right to have a family life, respect of privacy...).”
